Backend Developer (AI Platform)

About the Role

We're looking for a Backend Developer to take ownership of the server-side of our AI-powered learning assessment platform, Assess for Learning. You'll work on a production-grade, multi-tenant SaaS platform that uses large language models to generate, evaluate, and report on learner assessments — and you'll make regular contributions to the React frontend too. Development is AI-assisted: you'll use Claude Code as your primary coding assistant and be expected to direct, review, and validate AI-generated code as a core part of the workflow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain FastAPI routes, services, and background job pipelines
  • Develop and refine LLM prompt workflows: generation, evaluation, examiner logic, and AI compliance checks
  • Build and extend document and report generation pipelines (PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Integrate and deepen connections with third-party platforms (Salesforce, Slack, MCP agents)
  • Contribute React components and frontend features in support of backend changes
  • Write and maintain tests (pytest), ensure code quality, and review AI-generated code critically
  • Participate in infrastructure changes where required (Docker, Terraform, ECS deployments)

About You

  • Strong Python (3.10+): async/await, type hints, Pydantic, FastAPI or equivalent
  • Experience calling LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google) and building multi-step AI pipelines
  • Working knowledge of document generation libraries (WeasyPrint, python-docx, openpyxl, or similar)
  • Comfortable with MongoDB — document modelling, aggregation, and PyMongo
  • Able to contribute React (hooks, functional components, API integration) without dedicated frontend support
  • Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs with OpenAPI/Swagger
  • Familiarity with third-party API integration, OAuth2/OIDC flows, and webhook patterns
  • Writes meaningful tests with pytest and reviews code for correctness and security
  • Comfortable with Docker, able to read and modify multi-stage Dockerfiles
  • Familiar with AWS fundamentals (ECS, S3, CloudFront) at an operational level
  • Comfortable using AI coding tools (Claude Code or similar) as part of a daily development workflow

Key Responsibilities

  • Achieving sales targets
  • Work closely with Sales & Growth Manager for targeted outreach

  • Collaborate with marketing on messaging and campaigns
